Sporting bright green helmets and big smiles, South Bay children of various ages hopped on free bikes and pedaled home from a combined litter pickup and bike giveaway event in Campbell Saturday.
The children and their families first participated in the trash pickup based at Rosemary Elementary School. Afterward, about 50 bikes were distributed to the disadvantaged youth, almost all of whom walked there from nearby homes in San Jose’s Cadillac Winchester neighborhood.
Greg Cajina, a community coordinator for San Jose’s Project Hope program, said:
“The kids were excited, they were riding around, using the parking lot as a little place where they could test out their bikes.”
Project Hope and the Cadillac Winchester Association coordinated the litter pickup.
After filling bright green bags with trash, the children — who ranged in age from 5 to 15 — were fitted for their bikes by volunteers from Community Cycles of California, which provided free bicycles. The bike-based nonprofit holds giveaways every year.
Cajina said:
“Almost everybody walked to the event with their parents. One or two people drove, but everyone else walked. (The school is) right at the San Jose-Campbell border.”
The children showed up on foot, but sped away from the event on their free bikes, hopefully not too far in advance of their parents.
Santa Clara County Supervisor Susan Ellenberg’s office connected the bicycle organization with the neighborhood association. The bright green helmets were supplied by the San Jose Department of Transportation.
