Three people charged in shooting death of TV news crew security guard

Alameda County prosecutors have charged three people in connection with the shooting death of a security guard who was protecting a TV news crew in November, a spokesperson for prosecutors confirmed Wednesday.

Kevin Nishita died after the shooting on Nov. 24 in the 300 block of 14th Street in Oakland. In late December, Oakland police said two people had been arrested and a third was being sought in the killing. The third person is still outstanding, police and prosecutors said.

On Wednesday, police announced the charges against three suspects but did not identify them. Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong is planning a news conference Thursday to release more details about the case.

Nishita was protecting a KRON4 news crew when he was shot during what police believe was an attempted robbery.

Alameda County prosecutors declined to provide any more information Wednesday, referring questions to Oakland police when they hold the news conference Thursday.
