UC Berkeley, among other Bay Area schools, were ranked as the top universities according to the Center for World University Rankings released last week.
State Senate budget committee members voted Monday afternoon in favor a bill that will effectively allow about 2,600 more students to attend the University of California at Berkeley in the fall, following a court decision that capped enrollment at the elite school.
Committee members voted 16-0 in favor of Assembly Bill 168, which amends the California Environmental Quality Act so that student enrollment alone is not subject to CEQA.
UC Berkeley was ready to send out admission letters March 24, so the Legislature must act fast if lawmakers want the university to be able to do that.
The full Senate will be voting at 2 p.m. Monday on AB 168. The state Assembly on Monday morning conducted an informational hearing on the bill but took no vote.
Save Berkeley’s Neighborhoods sued the university over the impact that enrollment is having on the surrounding community and won pending an appeal.
