Two dead in separate Bay Area vehicle collisions with pedestrians

Separate collisions between vehicles and pedestrians Sunday and Monday in Richmond and San Jose left two people dead.

In Richmond, a woman died Monday morning after being struck by a pickup truck near Richmond on an onramp to Interstate Highway 80, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The woman was walking on the El Portal Drive onramp to westbound I-80 around 3 a.m. Monday when she was struck by a Ford F-150 pickup truck, a spokesperson for the CHP said.

The truck driver subsequently attempted to transport the woman to a hospital, but she ultimately died in his vehicle.

The driver then stopped near the intersection of Barrett Avenue and 12th Street in Richmond to contact law enforcement. The CHP responded to the scene after receiving a report at 3:21 a.m.

The coroner was called to the scene at 3:55 a.m., according to the CHP. The woman’s name has not yet been released as the coroner’s office attempts to contact her family.

A spokesperson for the CHP said the truck driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Drugs and alcohol are not believed to be a factor in the collision.

In San Jose on Sunday, a hit-and-run driver killed a pedestrian just after 8 p.m., according to San Jose police.

The incident happened in the area of S. White Road and East Hills Drive. The pedestrian was declared dead at the scene.

White Road has been closed in both directions and police ask that drivers use alternate routes. San Jose police tweeted it was the city’s first fatal traffic collision and first pedestrian fatality in 2022.
