Early morning I-80 collision leaves one dead, four injured

One man died and four people were injured Monday morning in a collision on eastbound Interstate Highway 80 in Richmond, the California Highway Patrol.

The crash was reported about 4:45 a.m., after a Toyota RAV4 flipped and came to rest on its side on the freeway near El Portal Drive, according to the CHP.

The RAV4 was first hit by a Honda Civic and then by a Toyota Corolla. The CHP said the driver and three passengers in the RAV4 were hospitalized with major injuries.

One of the passengers, a man whose name was not released, later died, the CHP said. The driver of the Honda was also hospitalized with minor injuries.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. It’s not believed that alcohol or drugs were a contributing factor, according to the CHP.

The collision closed the freeway until about 7 a.m.
