FBI officials issued a statement that the person shot and killed by one of their agents Monday in Oakland was carrying a gun at the time of the confrontation.
The shooting occurred about 3:22 p.m. Monday in the 2500 block of Fruitvale Avenue. The FBI agent was part of a U.S. Marshals Service task force serving a criminal arrest warrant.
Released by the FBI early Tuesday evening, the statement did not identify the person shot nor did it state whether the person was the suspect authorities were looking for.
The FBI statement did include a pledge to investigate the shooting.
“The FBI takes all shooting incidents involving our agents or task force members seriously. In accordance with FBI policy, the shooting incident is under investigation by the FBI’s Inspection Division. The review process is thorough, objective, and is conducted as expeditiously as possible under the circumstances.”
The man was publicly identified Tuesday by family members as 30-year-old Michael Jonathan Cortez, a father of three.
