A shootout with Amtrak police in Chicago left an Oakland man dead Tuesday, police said Friday.
Jamal Taylor, 33, was wanted for the killing of 55-year-old Robert Herron on Aug. 20 in the 8800 block of International Boulevard in Oakland. Taylor allegedly shot Herron.
Taylor arrived by train at Chicago Union Station on Tuesday evening and police met him on the platform. Police said Taylor ran from uniformed officers and then opened fire on the officers. An Amtrak employee was allegedly injured by Taylor when he ran, police said.
According to police, one officer returned fire and Taylor was hit. He was taken to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead, according to police. The Amtrak employee suffered minor injuries and was also hospitalized.
Prosecutors allege that Taylor had prior convictions in Alameda County for making criminal threats, DUI causing injury, commercial burglary and attempted grand theft. The alleged crimes went back to 2007, according to prosecutors.
Amtrak service was temporarily delayed due to the shootout, police said.
