Two men die in separate San Jose morning collisions

Two people were killed early Sunday morning within two hours of each other in separate San Jose collisions. 

The first incident was reported about 12:45 a.m. when a car fled after fatally hitting a man on King Road near Story Road.

The man had been walking in the northbound lanes of King outside a marked crosswalk when he was hit by a vehicle that was headed northbound, police said. The man, whose name was not released, died at the scene, police said.

The death marks the city’s 14th fatal pedestrian collision of 2021.

At 2:20 a.m., a 40-year-old San Jose man was killed after leaving his car following a freeway crash near downtown San Jose, the California Highway Patrol said.

The man was driving a 1972 Chevy Impala that entered northbound Interstate Highway 280 from the Fourth Street on-ramp and was crossing lanes when the car was hit by a Toyota Prius about 2:20 a.m..

Both cars ended up in the far left lane and center median, and the drivers got out of their cars. They were standing near the wreck when a BMW sedan came up in the left lane and hit both cars at high speed, the CHP said.

The Impala driver, who had been standing near his car, was ejected over the guardrail and into a parking lot below. He died at the scene, authorities said. His name was not released pending notification of next of kin.

Two men in the BMW suffered minor injuries.

Alcohol factored in the crash and the collision is under investigation, the CHP said.
