Bicyclist riding on highway dies after being struck by two vehicles

A bicyclist was killed Friday night in Oakland after being struck by a vehicle on eastbound Interstate Highway 580, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The incident occurred Friday night at around 10:02 p.m. on the highway near the State Route 24 connector, according to the CHP. In a statement released shortly after midnight, CHP officials said preliminary investigation determined the man was riding a bicycle in “complete darkness” and wearing dark clothing in the third lane just west of W. MacArthur Boulevard and was struck by two separate vehicles.

Officers arrived and found the man had died. His identity has not yet been confirmed.

A Sig-alert was issued due to the collision, and a portion of eastbound Interstate Highway 580 was temporarily closed as emergency crews worked the scene.

The roadway was reopened just before midnight.

The incident is under investigation and CHP said they do not know if drugs or alcohol were involved.

Anyone with information is asked to call the CHP tip line at 1-800-TELL-CHP or (510) 457-2875.
