Police arrest driver suspected of backing truck into outdoor diners, killing one

A suspect has been arrested in the Friday night crash that killed one person and injured two others when a vehicle crashed into an outdoor dining area of a sports bar and restaurant, San Jose police said.

Alex Moreno, 32, of San Jose, was arrested and booked into the Santa Clara County main jail on suspicion of felony DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter, according to San Jose police. Moreno is believed to have been impaired when the collision occurred at the Agave Sports Bar in the 500 block of West Alma Avenue, according to police.

The suspect was sitting in a parked white 2017 Chevrolet Silverado truck, accidentally put it in reverse and hit three people sitting in the outdoor dining area of the sports bar, police said. Officers responded around 9 p.m.

The three people, one woman and two men, were taken to the hospital, and the woman was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to police. The two men’s injuries weren’t severe enough to be life-threatening, police said.

There was a woman passenger in the Silverado, and she wasn’t hurt, police said.

This is the 24th fatal collision and 25th victim of 2021 for the city, according to police. It’s the eighth auto versus pedestrian fatal collision for 2021.
