San Francisco police said Friday afternoon that an officer shot and wounded an adult male who authorities said was a known auto burglary suspect. The shooting happened near Varney Place near Third Street in the South Beach neighborhood about two blocks from Oracle Park.
Police Department spokesperson Officer Robert Rueca said at a media press conference that plain clothes officers investigating auto burglaries encountered a “known auto burglary suspect vehicle” with three occupants inside known to officers as auto burglary suspects.
Rueca said one suspect was struck by officer gunfire while the two other suspects fled the scene in the vehicle. Rueca said officers rendered aid to the suspect and medics arrived at the scene. The suspect’s injuries are non-life-threatening.
Rueca said the investigation remains active and circumstances of what led to the shooting and how many shots were fired are not yet being disclosed. He also declined to comment on the suspect’s specific injuries.
At the time of the press conference, Rueca said the department would not provide details about the wounded suspect until he is booked.
Police will hold a town hall in 10 days to review the incident with the public, he said.
The area of Jack London Alley and Brannan Street was closed to traffic as police investigated the incident.
