An overnight standoff and shelter-in-place order in Pinole, Calif. ended peacefully Monday, May 3, 2021 when the 32-year-old armed suspect surrendered to police. The suspect's mother had called police with concerns that her son was making delusional statements and had access to firearms.
A 32-year-old armed suspect peacefully surrendered Monday morning and police lifted a lockdown on a Pinole neighborhood that lasted for nearly four hours.
The incident began the night before, when a woman called police about 10:30 p.m. to report that her son was making delusional statements and that there was a gun in the house. In addition, neighbors reported hearing four to five shots coming from the house in the 700 block of Marlesta Road.
When police arrived, they contacted the woman outside the house. The man wasn’t there but a a pit bull was found fatally shot inside.
The man, whose name has not been released, wasn’t located until about 2:10 a.m., when he was spotted driving near San Pablo Avenue and Sunnyview Drive by police.
He ran from the car and hid and jumped behind cars to elude officers. While a negotiating team communicated with him in person and by cell phone, a shelter-in-place was ordered for the areas of Marlesta Road between Belmont Way and Meadow Avenue, and Kildare Way between Marlesta Road and Tara Hills Drive.
About 9:30 a.m., negotiators convinced the man to surrender. He never made any threats, police said.
He discarded two handguns before surrendering, authorities said. The shelter-in-place was lifted shortly after the man was taken into custody.
Nearby schools — Shannon Elementary, Tara Hills Elementary and Pinole Middle schools — closed for in-person instruction for the day.
