Danville police say man advanced with knife before officer fired weapon

A Danville police officer was involved in a shooting Thursday afternoon, according to the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office.

Shortly before 12:30 p.m., police had closed down a portion of Sycamore Valley Road between Brookside Drive and San Ramon Valley Boulevard and the nearby off ramp due to police activity.

The sheriff’s office, which the police department works as part of, said in Twitter message at 1:36 p.m. that an officer-involved shooting occurred at Sycamore Valley Road and Camino Ramon, adding that details would be provided later.

According to a statement issued by the police department on Facebook around 6:20 p.m., an officer arrived at the scene in response to “several calls from motorists regarding a person who was throwing rocks off the Sycamore Valley Road overpass onto Highway 680.”

The statement goes on to say that the officer located a man in the street and attempted to talk to him, but the man pulled out a folding knife and refused repeated orders to drop it. They said the man advanced on the officer, who then discharged his firearm and struck him once.

A photo presented with the statement shows a man with a knife in one hand and a paper bag in the other.

A post shared on Twitter of a witness account included a photo of a man lying on the street with what appears to be a brown paper bag nearby and an officer with a his gun drawn.

The man, who has not been publicly identified, was taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek for treatment of his injuries. No information was provided about the extent of his injuries or current condition.
