Suspect stabs officer, injures another in struggle

Two police officers and a suspect were injured early Wednesday when police tried to make an arrest in San Francisco’s Noe Valley neighborhood.

Officers were in the area of 21st and Castro streets conducting a burglary surveillance operation around 5 a.m. Wednesday when they attempted to detain a man later identified as Sergio Lugo, 41.

Police said Lugo initially complied with officers but then became combative, taking out a weapon with a sharp edge and stabbing one officer in the left hand and left knee.

The second officer also injured his left hand in the struggle with the suspect, which they were able to get into handcuffs.

All three men were transported to a hospital and are expected to survive.

Lugo was later transported to county jail. He was arrested on suspicion of committing several violations, including assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, resisting arrest, brandishing a deadly weapon and possession of methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia and burglary tools.
