Crews begin work to replace structurally deficient Harbor Bay Bridge

A series of lane and ramp closures are expected in the coming days as Caltrans will begin the Harbor Bay Bridge Replacement Project in San Rafael Monday night.

Caltrans is planning to perform bridge removal work using innovative construction technology on the bridge’s original structure located at the northbound U.S. Highway 101 off-ramp.

The work will result in the closure of three lanes at 9 p.m. Monday, and overnight full ramp closures from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. through the rest of the workweek.

Motorists are advised to drive cautiously to safely maneuver lane shifts, traffic advisories and detour options.

According to Caltrans, the existing bridge has structural deficiencies that leave it vulnerable to seismic damage.  More information regarding the project can be found online.
