Pittsburg police shoot Oakland man who allegedly pointed gun at officers

A 32-year-old Oakland man who drew a handgun after ignoring officer commands was shot Friday afternoon, but is expected to survive, Pittsburg police said.

The man, who had been reported on the roof of a commercial business in the 3700 block of Harbor Street early Friday afternoon, had climbed down and was standing by a car in the parking lot when officers arrived.

The man ignored commands to stay where he was, then picked up a handgun from the rear tire of the car and ran away from officers, police said.

Another officer responding to the scene pursued and caught up to the man, who ignored several commands to lie on the ground, according to police.

Police said:

“The man then ran behind another vehicle and pointed the handgun at the officer. The officer then used his service weapon once, striking the man in the arm. The man immediately dropped the handgun and fell to the ground.”

The man was handcuffed and given life-saving measures before being taken to the hospital, police said.

A loaded handgun was recovered at the scene.

Protocols for an officer-involved shooting are being followed and the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office will conduct an independent investigation, as will the Pittsburg Police Department’s independent outside investigator, the department said.

The department said it “will be releasing body-cam footage within the coming days of the incident, along with the officer’s name.”
