The San Francisco Giants are reportedly closing in on a deal with utility infielder Tommy La Stella, with a three-year deal pending a physical.
The Giants front office has said they are looking to add another left-handed bat, and it seems as if they have their guy.
La Stella started the 2020 season with the Los Angeles Angels before a trade to the Oakland Athletics for the remainder of the season. Playing in 55 of 60 total games, La Stella saw time at 1B, 2B, 3B, and DH. It’s clear that the Giants value La Stella’s versatility, and will likely use him in a similar way.
La Stella is the left-handed bat that the Giants have been searching for this offseason. A good hitter who gets on base, La Stella also has a little bit of power for his size.
In fact, he delivered one of many heartbreaks for the Giants in 2020.
The Giants infield is crowded, very crowded. Players such as Brandon Belt, Brandon Crawford, Mauricio Dubon, Wilmer Flores, Evan Longoria, Darin Ruf, Donovan Solano, and Jason Vosler already take up eight spots on the active roster.
Where La Stella will fit into the mix remains a question, although it seems likely he will see plenty of time at second and third base. Fortunately for the Giants, his versatility should allow him to see plenty of playing time on a team that aims to get the most out of every player.
