BART board elects new leadership to navigate turbulent times

The BART Board of Directors on Thursday elected Director Mark Foley as board president and Director Rebecca Saltzman as board vice president, BART officials said.

The election of Foley and Saltzman came during the BART Board of Directors’ annual election for leadership positions.

Foley said one of his primary goals during his 2021 term will be to work on fundamentally changing the way BART is funded.

BART officials said the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting economic fallout have drastically reduced the amount of money BART has been able to earn from passenger fares.

Prior to the pandemic, passenger fares were the most important source of funding for BART, officials said.

Foley is scheduled to preside over BART board meetings beginning on Jan. 14.
