Night of drinking leads to accidental gun discharge, injuring 21-year-old man

A Petaluma man accidentally shot and injured another man Monday night after a night of drinking, police said.

Police arrested 21-year-old Petaluma resident William Gingras-McCauley on suspicion of negligent discharge of a firearm causing injury, a felony.

Police received a call about the shooting at 11:50 p.m. Monday from the 1400 block of Mountain View Avenue.

Gingras-McCauley admitted to accidentally discharging a rifle, inadvertently striking the victim in the upper torso. The 21-year-old victim suffered life-threatening injuries but is expected to survive.
