Police say man suddenly walked into street, was fatally struck by car

A pedestrian died after being hit by a car early Friday on East 14th Street in San Leandro, police said.

A motorist was headed north in the 14500 block of East 14th about 4:40 a.m., when a man suddenly walked into the street mid-block, outside of any crosswalks, according to police.

The man, whose name was not released, was hit by the car and died at the scene. It’s not known why the man walked into the street, police said.

The driver remained on scene and cooperated with officers. Police said it doesn’t appear that speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.

East 14th Street between 143rd Avenue and 146th Avenue was closed to traffic for about an hour for an investigation and has since been reopened.
