Philhour’s lead grows slightly in tight District 1 supervisor race

Marjan Philhour is holding onto a thin lead in the ranked-choice San Francisco District 1 supervisor race, but the difference is still too close to call.

Philhour leads opponent Connie Chan by 87 votes, according to the latest numbers released by the Department of Elections Thursday. Philhour is netting 13,616 votes while Chan is sitting with 13,591 after votes were redistributed from third-place finisher David Lee. The winner will represent the Richmond District where current Supervisor Sandra Lee Fewer is stepping down.

Philhour was up by just 25 votes in Wednesday reporting, though Chan was narrowly ahead with Election Day early returns. 

Election officials say the department still has approximately 61,000 ballots to process, including 51,000 vote-by-mail ballots, 9,000 provisional ballots and 900 conditional voter registration ballots.

The United States Postal Service delivered 500 mail-in-ballots to the department Thursday, of which 300 were postmarked on or before Election Day, the department said. The other 200 are not be eligible for this election due to late mailing. 

Election officials will an update on preliminary results at 4 p.m. Friday.
