Firefighter in critical condition after hose line strikes him in head

A San Francisco firefighter is in critical condition Monday evening after he was struck by hose line, fire officials said.

The firefighter responded at 3:30 p.m. Monday to a high-rise fire on the 19th floor of 55 Spear St., fire Lt. Jonathan Baxter said.

As firefighters were wrapping up their work, a San Francisco Municipal Railway bus was passing through the area.

Firefighter Matt Vann was struck by a hose line, Baxter said. Vann fell, hit his head and was unconscious and not breathing afterward, according to Baxter. Vann was taken to San Francisco General Hospital.

Vann is a six-year veteran of the department and is stationed at Station No. 1 at 935 Folsom St.
