Two juveniles admitted to South San Francisco police Friday that they were responsible for starting what would become a four-alarm fire on San Bruno Mountain, the site of the city’s historic “Sign Hill.”
The brush fire, near where concrete letters on the hill spell out “South San Francisco The Industrial City”, began just before noon Friday. Due to hot, dry and windy conditions, South San Francisco firefighters called for a fourth alarm.
Countywide mutual aid was eventually requested to assist with fighting the fire and evacuating homes above the fire. Cal Fire helicopters and an aerial firefighting tanker assisted in battling the blaze.
Numerous residents who live nearby were evacuated, though no injuries were reported.
Officers identified two juveniles, ages 14 and 16, from South San Francisco. After questioning them, the juveniles admitted to starting the fire. They were released to relatives.
The fire department is conducting a full investigation.
