Police are investigating a shooting early Wednesday afternoon that left two people dead in East Oakland, officials said.
The shooting was reported at 12:47 p.m. in the 1900 block of 84th Avenue.
Three people were shot, two fatally, according to police press briefing around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday’s homicides mark the 77th and 78th homicides in Oakland this year.
Oakland police Lt. LeRonne Armstrong said during the press conference:
“But these aren’t just numbers. These are people. These are people from our community that have lost their lives to senseless violence. This is a community that’s dealing with trauma.”
Police believe the shooting was the result of a confrontation between a group of individuals, Armstrong said.
The victims’ identities have yet to be released.
Armstrong said that in a separate incident Tuesday night, 60 rounds were fired in a residential neighborhood just three blocks from the scene of Wednesday’s shooting.
