Petaluma’s D Street Bridge closes for river dredging project

The historic D Street Bridge in Petaluma will close to all traffic starting at noon Sunday through the end of Oct. 13 for a river dredging project, the city announced.

The closure applies to motor, bicycle and pedestrian traffic, which will be diverted to the river crossing at Washington Street.

The city said trucks should detour through Petaluma Boulevard South via U.S. Highway 101 to cross the river while avoiding downtown.

Golden Gate and Petaluma Transit will also be rerouted to avoid the D Street Bridge.

The dredging work is scheduled for completion in mid-October.

The city said in an announcement:

“Once complete, boats will be able to navigate up to the turning basin, bringing tourism and business to Petaluma.”

The U.S. Army Corp of Engineers is sponsoring the dredging project, which was last done in 2003. Work will be done continuously to ensure completion by mid-October, officials said.
