Dangerous rip currents, large breaking waves prompt beach hazard warning

The National Weather Service has issued a beach hazard statement for Friday, asking beach-goers to stay out of the water due to hazardous conditions.

Large breaking waves and dangerous rip currents are being reported from the coast of Sonoma County down south to the Monterey Coast.

Large breaking waves may reach between 15 and 20 feet and steep beaches may see breaking waves more than 20 feet, according to weather service officials.

Affected areas include the coastal North Bay, San Francisco, the Peninsula, the Monterey Bay and the Big Sur coast.

The beach hazards statement remains in effect through Friday evening, weather service officials said.
