Police say man attempted suicide after firing at officers

A male suspect is in the hospital after allegedly shooting at Pleasant Hill police and then attempting suicide at the rear of a school Monday evening, police said.

Pleasant Hill police said officers had initially been dispatched earlier Monday to a report of a person in possession of a firearm at a home. As they arrived in the area, the officers saw someone driving a vehicle away.

They attempted to pull the vehicle over but the person opened fire at them. Police said the suspect then drove to the rear of a school and attempted suicide with the firearm. He was taken to a hospital to be treated for his injuries, and his name and an update on his condition were not immediately available.

No officers or anyone else reported injuries as a result of the gunfire.

The Police Department wrote on Facebook:

“If you heard some unusual sounds and sirens tonight, know that the situation is under control and your PHPD is here as always.”
