Fire officials said a fifth alarm commercial building fire Wednesday morning in Oakland’s Chinatown has been contained as of 10:10 a.m.
An alert was issued at 8:40 a.m. for the fire at Seventh and Webster streets. The fire was burning on the second floor of a two-story building, according to fire officials.
In a press briefing at 9:42 a.m., interim Fire Chief Melinda Drayton said the fire started in a dumpster behind and between the buildings at 718 and 714 Webster Street building where restaurants occupy the first floor and possible tenants live on the second floor.
Drayton added:
“We will continue to actively fight this fire until we feel like it is no longer tenable for our firefighters to either be inside or on the roof.”
The public has been asked to stay away from the area while crews continue putting out hotspots. Delays are expected to and from Alameda.
