Berkeley city officials issued a statement telling residents in the hills to be prepared for evacuation “with or without notice from public safety officials.”
They encourage residents to leave their homes immediately if fire is visible nearby or if strong winds carry embers near homes.
The statement said:
“If you feel threatened, leave immediately. Do not wait for an evacuation order.”
A city evacuation map is provided online with designated zones that will be referenced in the case of evacuation orders. Cal Fire is keeping an evacuation and warning map updated for areas impacted by the fires, which can be accessed here.
The warning is prompted by the growing SCU Lightning Complex wildfires, which Cal Fire reported had grown to 291,968 acres as of Saturday morning. The collection of fires spans over five counties: Santa Clara, Alameda, Contra Costa, San Joaquin and Stanislaus.
The National Weather Service issued a red flag warning from Sunday night to Monday evening when more thunderstorms and dry lightning are expected across the Bay Area. Erratic, gusty winds associated with the forecast in combination with lightning strikes present extreme fire danger.
