They finally got it done: The San Francisco 49ers have officially locked up their best player to a long-term extension.
An extension has been in the works for months, even dating back to last season. It was the worst-kept secret in the league that George Kittle was about to be the highest-paid tight end in NFL history, and that became official Thursday morning.
Throughout the offseason, there was constant speculation regarding Kittle’s contract, and if it would reach wide receiver-level money. The best tight end in football, and one of the best pass-catchers in the league, certainly deserves to shatter the market.
Early Wednesday, Sports Illustrated’s Grant Cohn reported that the 49ers and Kittle had already agreed on a contract and were set to announce it Friday. Kittle pushed back, and it seemed (at the time) that the two sides were still not there yet.
The numbers were off, but the timing certainly was not.
Nevertheless, Kittle and the 49ers got it done. It remains unclear how Kittle’s contract will impact the 49ers salary cap situation as more details are sure to come out over the next 24 hours.
For now, the 49ers can feel good about their offseason, and the future for this franchise.
