A San Leandro police K-9 has been found safe Thursday morning after the dog ran away during a shooting by an officer that killed a stolen vehicle suspect in Oakland on Wednesday night.

Kane, a 2-year-old Belgian Malinois, ran off during the shooting that occurred around 11 p.m. Wednesday after the suspect crashed the stolen car into the rear of an unoccupied parked vehicle in the 10400 block of Pearmain Street.

The driver, whose name hasn’t been released, allegedly exited the vehicle while holding an assault-style firearm. An officer then discharged his service weapon, striking the driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene, San Leandro police said.

Police did not say where they found the K-9, which was unleashed when it ran off.

Because the shooting occurred in Oakland, the Oakland Police Department will lead the law enforcement investigation into the shooting. The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office will conduct a secondary, independent investigation. The officer involved in the shooting was placed on administrative leave.
