A suspect is in custody again after being arrested and then somehow getting possession of a gun and opening fire in the lower level of the Santa Clara County Main Jail in San Jose early Wednesday morning, county sheriff’s officials said.
The sheriff’s office initially wrote on social media shortly after 3:20 a.m. about the shots fired, which prompted a lockdown of the jail while authorities surrounded the suspect in the basement parking lot of the jail at 150 W. Hedding St.
The suspect, whose name hasn’t been released, remained inside of a patrol vehicle while tactical units blocked both the entrance and exit from the parking lot and shut down nearby streets.
At 5:50 a.m., the sheriff’s office wrote on Twitter that the suspect had peacefully surrendered. No other information about the case was immediately available Wednesday morning.
