One firefighter was injured and nine people were displaced as a result of a two-alarm fire in Oakland early Tuesday morning, a fire battalion chief said.
The fire was reported around 3:15 a.m. at a two-story building in the 3000 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way.
About 45 firefighters responded to the blaze and extinguished it within about an hour and 20 minutes while keeping it contained to the building where it started, Battalion Chief Heather Mozdean said.
Crews had to battle the blaze from the exterior of the building due to interior and roof collapses. One firefighter suffered injuries in the response to the fire and was taken to a hospital, but has since been treated and released, Mozdean said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but firefighters believe it started in an exterior courtyard, according to Mozdean. The building is considered a total loss as a result of damage from the blaze, she said.
