Coroner identifies 29-year-old missing boater found dead Sunday

A man found dead Sunday morning after being reported missing Friday night in Indian Slough near Discovery Bay has been identified by the Contra Costa County coroner’s office as 29-year-old Marina resident Joseph Cairel.

Authorities had initially responded around 8:25 p.m. Friday about someone who went missing from a boat, but the search was initially unsuccessful, according to the county sheriff’s office.

Contra Costa Sheriff's Office Joseph Cairel, 29, of Marina, Calif. was identified as the boater who went overboard in Indian Slough in Discovery Bay and was found dead Sunday, June 28, 2020.

The sheriff’s dive team was then called at about 9:50 a.m. Sunday to an area not far from where the boater had been reported missing and found the body of Cairel.

Investigators did not say how he may have gone into the water, but said other people on the boat began searching for him immediately after noticing he was missing, according to the sheriff’s office.
