A man was hit by gunfire Friday while driving on state Highway 4 in an apparent targeted shooting, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The victim was driving a black pickup truck headed eastbound on the freeway near Lone Tree Way around noon, when someone in a gray SUV shot at the pickup about three times, the CHP said.

The SUV was possibly a 90s model Mitsubishi, authorities said.

The man was hit in the leg and was hospitalized.
