The Fremont Police Department on Tuesday announced the arrest of a 23-year-old Antioch resident in connection with a recent home invasion while asking for the public’s help in finding another suspect in the case who remains at large and should be considered armed and dangerous.
Officers with the department’s SWAT team arrested Tyler Spears on Thursday for allegedly participating in a May 5 home invasion at a residence in the 2000 block of Laurel Canyon Court. Multiple police departments are still seeking the location of the other suspect, 21-year-old San Francisco resident Vermond Jones.
According to Fremont police, Spears and Jones entered the home and pointed firearms at the resident living there, forced the victim to lie on the ground and then stole multiple items. A third suspect, who officers did not identify, remained outside in a getaway vehicle.
Using video surveillance footage, the department’s investigative unit determined that Spears and Jones had attempted separate home invasions and burglaries in Fremont and Union City and robbed a woman in San Francisco on May 5 as well.
Spears and Jones are documented gang members and both have extensive criminal histories, Fremont police said.
Fremont SWAT officers arrested Spears in Vallejo and found him in possession of a loaded firearm allegedly stolen during another burglary in Suisun City in January. Spears was scheduled to be arraigned at Alameda County’s East County Hall of Justice on Tuesday afternoon.
Jones has six additional cases pending in San Francisco Superior Court but had been released from custody with a GPS ankle monitor at the time of the May 5 home invasion. Jones disabled the ankle monitor that evening.
Jones is a black man standing roughly 6 feet tall and weighing about 190 pounds. His last known address is located near 10th and Market streets in San Francisco, according to Fremont police.
