A police pursuit began early Sunday, September 15, 2019 when it is alleged Eric Van Gelder of Geyserville, Calif. failed to stop, drove past a closed road break, nearly hit a California Highway Patrol officer and led them on a chase exceeding 100 mph. A long standoff took place after a spike strip disabled Van Gelder's vehicle. A SWAT team later removed him from the car using "non-lethal methods."
A 26-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol for a crash that killed four people on southbound state Highway 85 in San Jose on Wednesday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Rabbi Kumar Khanna, a San Jose resident, was arrested after the crash reported shortly before 10:15 p.m. on southbound Highway 85 sough of Cottle Road, CHP officials said.
Khanna was driving a 2005 Dodge Durango when he lost control of the vehicle, causing it to spin out, travel toward the right-hand shoulder and then strike a sound wall.
Four passengers — three men ages 26, 26 and 25 and a 25-year-old woman — died while a fifth passenger, a 24-year-old man, was taken to Regional Medical Center of San Jose with minor injuries, according to the CHP.
The crash prompted the closure of southbound Highway 85 in the area until about 9 a.m. Thursday, CHP officials said.
