Coroner identifies 29-year-old pedestrian killed on Highway 4

A pedestrian fatally struck on westbound state Highway 4 in Antioch on Friday night has been identified by the Contra Costa County coroner’s office as 29-year-old Pinole resident Steven Armstrong.

California Highway Patrol officers responded at about 9:20 p.m. to the collision reported on westbound Highway 4 east of Laurel Road. Armstrong was found lying in the roadway and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators determined a 23-year-old Bethel Island woman was driving west on the highway in a 2012 Nissan Versa when Armstrong ended up directly in the path of her vehicle and she was unable to avoid striking him, according to the CHP.

The Nissan driver was taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek with major but not life-threatening injuries, and her two passengers were not injured, CHP officials said.

Anyone with information about the collision or the events leading up to it is asked to call the CHP’s Contra Costa-area office at (925) 646-4980.
