Suisun City police said Monday that it appears a man intentionally drove off a boat launch ramp at a high rate of speed into the Suisun Slough on Saturday night.
Police Cmdr. Jeremy Crone said a video of the incident and witness statements indicate the lone occupant of the vehicle intended to die by suicide.
The Solano County coroner’s office said the driver was a 46-year-old Fairfield man.
The car went into the water around 9:30 p.m. Saturday. A trained Suisun City Fire Department rescue swimmer found the vehicle in about 10 feet of water and tried to pull the man from the vehicle. He was able to open the driver-side door but could not free the driver without dive equipment, fire officials said on Facebook.
Dozens of volunteers from the Solano County Office of Emergency Services’ Rescue Dive Team and Marine Patrol, the Suisun City fire and police departments, and the Solano County Sheriff’s Office worked to retrieve the man’s body by around 10:30 a.m. Sunday.
Soon after emergency responders arrived at the boat ramp Saturday night, there was a separate report about a sinking boat in distress about a quarter-mile from the boat ramp.
Crone said no one was injured in that incident.
