Woman dies after crashing down embankment, striking several trees

A female driver died after crashing down an embankment from eastbound Interstate Highway 580 just within Pleasanton city limits early Thursday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash was reported at about 1:25 a.m. on eastbound Highway 580 west of San Ramon Road/Foothill Road.

A blue Toyota RAV4 went down the embankment, through a wooded area, struck several trees, then went through a chain-link fence onto Dublin Canyon Road, then struck a power pole and came to rest, CHP Officer Tyler Hahn said.

The driver was taken to Eden Medical Center, where she succumbed to her injuries, Hahn said. Her name is not yet being released.

CORRECTION: A previous version of this article indicated the crash was east of Castro Valley, but the CHP has clarified it happened just within the city limits of Pleasanton. The story has been updated to reflect the correct location.
