McClymonds High School in Oakland, Calif. closed Thursday, February 20, 2020 after trichloroethylene was detected in the school's groundwater.
The Oakland Unified School District Board of Education unanimously agreed to approve Superintendent Kyla Johnson-Trammell’s new three-year contract during its Wednesday evening meeting, according to OUSD officials.
Oakland native Johnson-Trammell started working for the district in 2017, and district officials touted her continued succession as a tribute to her ability from keeping the district out of state control during crises.
District officials credit Johnson-Trammell’s leadership during the 2019 teacher’s strike contract negotiations with helping to bring that work standoff to an end, in addition to her current work during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Her new contract will run until the end of June 2023.
Johnson-Trammell said in a statement:
“I always wanted to work in my hometown, and it’s been my greatest honor to lead OUSD. I went to school here with some of our parents, and now I’m raising my children in our schools.”
The superintendent said:
“Seeing the district first as a student, then as a teacher and principal, as a parent, and now as superintendent, I know well the challenges that Oakland residents face.”
Per the district, she has spent all but two of her 23 years working in education in the Oakland Unified School District.
The district has had to wade through a couple of serious matters in 2020: the novel coronavirus pandemic and the filing of a lawsuit claiming excessive force by its officers during an October 2019 board meeting.
District officials said should Johnson-Trammell finish her new contract, she’ll be the most tenured superintendent in the past half century. Stuart S. Phillips completed an eight-year term as superintendent in 1970.
The board also approved the contract of new chief business officer Lisa Grant-Dawson, district officials said. She starts work next Monday.
