Update: Police peacefully resolve Oakland standoff with armed occupants of crashed car

Update: Oakland police said via Twitter that the standoff was peacefully resolved at 9:49 a.m. after several hours. Police detained two people, who were given medical treatment, and a firearm was recovered.

Oakland police are in a standoff Thursday morning after officers saw a gun inside a car that crashed into a light pole but were not able to get the vehicle’s occupants to follow commands, a police spokeswoman said.

The standoff began after Oakland police responded at 7:07 a.m. to the crash in the 4000 block of Edwards Avenue, just off of Interstate Highway 580, Oakland police spokeswoman Officer Johnna Watson said.

Police have seen movement in the car but the driver and passenger are not responding to officers’ directions, Watson said. The California Highway Patrol is also at the scene.

She said officers remained at the scene as of shortly before 9:30 a.m. and had not resolved the situation.
