CORRECTION: Seventy people test positive for Covid-19 from MSC South homeless shelter

San Francisco Mayor London Breed announced Friday that Covid-19 has infected 70 people at the MSC South emergency homeless shelter.

Of those infected, two are staff members and 68 are residents, representing nearly one-fifth of the shelter’s regular homeless population located at 747 Howard St. However, The City has reduced the capacity over the course of the past few weeks in an effort to thin out the population and reduce the possibility of spread.

Breed said approximately 100 people remained at the shelter as of Thursday night. In a Twitter statement, the mayor said:

“We are moving the remaining individuals who have not tested positive to hotel rooms. Those who have tested positive will remain at MSC South in quarantine and (San Francisco Department of Public Health) is deploying staff there to provide medical treatment on-site.”

Breed added that The City has been preparing for this reality and is ready to respond but stressed the critical importance of residents following the stay-at-home orders.
