Infant boy fights for life in intensive care with injuries deputies say father caused

A 33-year-old father was arrested Tuesday morning on suspicion of causing life-threatening injuries to his son, San Mateo County sheriff’s officials said.

Carl Walstra was arrested at 11 a.m. in the 100 block of Leslie Drive in San Carlos after detectives obtained a $100,000 arrest warrant.

Sheriff’s officials said an extensive investigation was conducted before Walstra was arrested. The 4-month-old boy was apparently injured seriously enough to be taken from Kaiser Permanente Redwood City Medical Center to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland.

The boy had to be placed in intensive care, according to the sheriff’s office. Detectives believe that no other children were allegedly harmed by Walstra.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to get in touch with Detective Jerri Cosens at (650) 363-4367 or at jcosens@smcgov.org.
