A family member has been arrested for an assault that killed a man in Hayward late Wednesday night, police said.
Officers who responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon in the 3000 block of Vanderbilt Street at about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday found a man and a woman who were injured, according to police.
The male victim was given medical attention but was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The woman was transported to a hospital, where she was treated for her injuries and is in stable condition.
Police said a suspect, whose name isn’t yet available, was arrested for the assault and is in custody. They said their preliminary investigation indicates that the suspect and victims were family members and the assault was not a random act of violence.
The case was the fifth homicide in Hayward so far this year, but police said the assault is not connected to any other recent homicides and there are no safety concerns for the community.
Hayward police said anyone with information about the assault should call them at (510) 293-7176.
