SF State employee tests positive for COVID-19

An San Francisco State University employee has been diagnosed with COVID-19 and is being treated by a local medical center, according to campus officials.

In an e-mail from SF State president Lynn Mahoney to faculty and staff Sunday night, Mahoney said the employee lives off-campus and was last on campus Friday, March 6.

SF State is the largest four-year university in San Francisco, with 28,880 undergraduate and graduate students as of the Fall 2019 semester.

SF State had previously shut down in-person class meetings March 6, in preparation for virtual class meetings, primarily via video chat, starting Monday.

The university, under direction from the San Francisco Department of Health, is contacting individuals who may have had contact with the affected employee, according the the e-mail.

In the e-mail, Mahoney said all employees who fall under Sunday’s order from Gov. Gavin Newsom to self-isolate are forbidden from entering campus. This includes individuals above age 65 or with underlying health conditions.

In California, six people have died of COVID-19 with 335 positive cases statewide as of 6 p.m. Saturday, according to the California Department of Health. The San Francisco Department of Public Health reported 39 cases with no deaths as of Sunday at 10 a.m.
