A 59-year-old man suffered a medical emergency and died while he was being booked in the Sonoma County Jail late Friday night, Santa Rosa police said.
The Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety arrested the man on suspicion of being under the influence of a controlled substance and a violation of probation, police Lt. Dan Marincik said.
The medical emergency occurred during a pre-medical screening in the booking area at 11:53 p.m. Friday. Corrections officers performed life-saving measures but the man could not be revived and he was pronounced dead at approximately 12:30 a.m. Saturday, Marincik said.
Santa Rosa police are investigating the case and the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an autopsy to determine the cause of death, Marincik said.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Juan Valencia said Monday morning the man’s next of kin have not yet been notified.
A 56-year-old Santa Rosa man who was arrested and booked in the Sonoma County Jail on Jan. 22 on suspicion of DUI was admitted to a hospital while still in custody on Feb. 25 for a pre-existing medical condition.
That inmate, Salvador Jimenez, died at the hospital around 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 29, according to the sheriff’s office. His death also is under investigation.
