Twenty-one people aboard the Grand Princess cruise ship have tested positive for COVID-19 as of Friday, March 6, 2020. The ship had just finished a two-week trip to Hawaii and has been moored off the coast of San Francisco, Calif. for two days out of concern for those on on board presenting symptoms.
Forty-six people aboard the Grand Princess cruise ship moored just outside San Francisco were swabbed for novel coronavirus, 21 of which tested positive.
Vice President Mike Pence shared the test results during a press conference held around 2:40 p.m. Friday, adding that the remainder of the people on board will now be tested. There are thousands of people aboard the ship that recently completed a two-week voyage to Hawaii. The Grand Princess has been held off the coast since Wednesday.
The U.S. National Guard used helicopters to fly the test kits to the cruise ship.
Of those infected with the virus, officially known as COVID-19, two are passengers and 19 are members of the crew. Pence said the ship will be docked at a non-commercial port while the remaining crew and passengers are tested, adding:
“Those who need to be quarantined will be quarantined.”
