Pending confirmation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, another person in San Mateo County has tested positive for the coronavirus, county health officials said Monday.
The adult is in isolation and has been hospitalized. Health officials said they do not know how the person contracted the disease.
It appears the person was not exposed to the virus by traveling or by contact with a person with the virus.
Dr. Scott Morrow, San Mateo County health officer, encourages residents to follow CDC guidelines for preventing any disease.
The guidelines include washing hands frequently, covering a sneeze and staying home when sick.
Morrow said:
“Also, please dust off your personal emergency plans to make sure you have proper provisions at your home including water, medications, and food.”
County health staff members are following up with everyone who had close contact with the person who tested positive for the disease. Those people are at risk of becoming infected.
County Health officials said people who have had casual contact with the patient are at minimal risk of getting infected. Casual contact could be described as being in the same business or restaurant with someone who is infected.
Now two people in the county have the virus. Health officials said the other person was repatriated to the U.S. by the CDC.
The person is in isolation and in good condition.
Following the report of the second case, county officials activated the emergency operations center to monitor the situation and coordinate resources.
EOC staff will be working to reduce the spread of the virus and limit any impacts. Its staff may identify housing needed to quarantine people if necessary and conduct other work.
The EOC is located at the San Mateo County Regional Operations Center in Redwood City and will operate through Friday when the need to keep it open will be reassessed.
