County confirms fourth COVID-19 case stemmed from ‘household contact’

A fourth case of COVID-19 in Santa Clara County has been confirmed, the county Public Health Department said Saturday.

The person in the newest coronavirus instance “is an adult woman who is a household contact of the third Santa Clara County case” that was announced Friday, the department said in an announcement.

The woman is not hospitalized or ill and is being isolated at home, the department said.

The latest confirmation follows concerns over the county’s third confirmed case of coronavirus, which Santa Clara health officials said is an older woman who differs from the two previously identified cases because she “does not have a travel history nor any known contact with a traveler or infected person,” officials said Friday.

The woman in the third case has chronic health conditions and had been hospitalized with a respiratory illness, the county Public Health Department said Friday.

The department said:

“We expected more cases of COVID-19 in our county and have been preparing for community transmission.”

The department added:

“Since the disease is here, an important priority for the department will be to conduct community surveillance to determine the extent of local spread. The County Public Health Laboratory has the ability to test for the virus and can identify cases quickly and take appropriate action.”

The first case in the county, a male, was announced on Jan. 31, required no hospitalization, and was released from isolation fully recovered on Feb. 20.

The second case, announced Feb. 2, remains in home isolation.

The county said:

“(We are) working closely with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the State of California Department of Public Health, and other partners to protect and inform the public.”

The county has established a coronavirus webpage to provide the public with more information.
